In 2007, TfL Surface Transport recognised a need to enhance and expand accident investigation training across its many business units. Dave McLellan, Surface Transport Safety Training Manager, set about evaluating the various options and 'was most impressed by the courses run under the auspices of the Institute of Industrial Accident Investigators'.
Dave contacted the Institute for preliminary discussions and it was decided that a joint development initiative was the way forward. Paul Difford, Director of the Research & Development Centre, was appointed to assist and together with Dave produced two courses specifically for TfL Surface Transport. The generic IIAI Lead Accident Investigators' Certificate was modified to incorporate a comprehensive Tfl specific case study and this is now used for the training of selected personnel. An IIAI/TFL Foundation Course was also developed and this is used for the bulk of Surface Transport's general accident investigation training. Of note, five Tfl staff are currently undergoing IIAI Instructor Approval so that Surface Transport will be self-sufficient as regards in-house deliveries of IIAI/TFL Foundation Courses.
Note for editors: TfL Surface Transport is responsible for London's taxis, buses, river services and Victoria Coach Station.
Following the first round of highly successful courses, Surface Transport organised an awards ceremony at which Richard Stephenson (Transport for London Group Director of HSE) presented Managers with their Lead Certificates (Richard is pictured below right presenting to Christopher Eleftheriou, Regional Operations Manager-Central). |
