GUIDANCE
IIAI Full Membership
based on
Prior Experience.
There is no set format for a declaration of experience, each application is considered on its own merits. As a general rule, those who have had some form of involvement (regular or intermittent) with some element of the investigative process over the past three years (whether with one or more employers) will be automatically successful; the Constitution requires us to seek ways to support your application, not reject it. If we need more information we will therefore contact you via email with this in mind. If you are uncertain about your application, you may of course email us first.
The examples below (far from exhaustive) are for guidance only and may or may not be similar to your experience. All you need to do, concisely, is describe the experience that you feel should allow you direct entry as a Full Member without the need for examination.
Example 1.
An element of my normal role requires occasional involvement with the accident investigation process and I have been doing this for the past three years. (this applicant would, as with all others, bullet point what they do or have done).
Example 2.
An element of my normal role has required me to conduct investigations for my full-time employer/s under supervision and I have done this for three years. (this applicant would, as with all others, bullet point what they do or have done).
Example 3.
An element of my normal role requires me to conduct investigations for or on behalf of my full-time employer unsupervised and I have been doing this for more than six months (applicants like this, or those who have yet to complete six months with their employer, might supplement their declaration by referencing work with other employers).
Example 4.
I carry out investigations on behalf of my clients and have been doing this successfully for more than one year (this applicant might not have conducted many investigations in his/her consultancy role so would supplement this by referencing experience gained elsewhere).
Example 5.
I am currently employed full time as an accident investigator and have been undertaking work of this nature on behalf of my full-time employer for more than six months. (applicants like this one, or those who have yet to complete six months with their current employer, might supplement their declaration by referencing work with other employers).
Example 6.
As an administrator I do not get involved directly with investigations but, over the past three years... (this applicant might describe things like arranging accident investigation related training, or collating data from reports/forms, or managing data bases perhaps, or managing close out requirements, or providing reports on trends, or managing relevant systems).
Example 7.
As a Supervisor/Manager/Director I occasionally have to request investigations to be conducted in my area of the business which I am then required to lead or review or report on. I have three years experience of this. (this applicant would, as with all others, bullet point what they do or have done).
Example 8.
I have over three years experience as a member of a committee that regularly reviews things like accident reports, the causes of accidents or remedial recommendations (as with all of the above examples, this application might identify similar or related roles with a number of employers that collectively total three years experience).
Example 9.
An element of my normal role requires me to receive reports or information regarding accidents or other failures. I then report on these in-house and/or to a local regulatory authority. (this applicant would, as with all others, bullet point what they do or have done).
Example 10.
Part of my role requires me to analyse CCTV footage of accidents and alleged accidents. (this applicant would, as with all others, bullet point what they do or have done).
Example 11.
As regards certain types of accidents or failures I occasionally undertake in-depth root cause analysis. (this applicant would, as with all others, bullet point what they do or have done).
Example 12.
An element of my normal role requires me to interview people who have witnessed or been involved in accidents. (this applicant would, as with all others, bullet point what they do or have done).
